ABOUT KAM

Sixteen-year-old Kameron May fell two stories in April 2022 in downtown Winchester, Kentucky.  His significant injuries were life-changing, with the most serious being Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI). While in pediatric ICU at the University of Kentucky, he then suffered a stoke which has further impeded his recovery.  Although the road has been long and tedious, Kam continues to improve day by day.  Some of these milestones are:

  • Removal of tracheostomy
  • Graduation from minimally conscious state
  • Tracks movement with his eyes, and can use his eyes to communicate on his eye gaze therapy device
  • Has regained some strength on left side of neck and is starting to be able to turn in that direction
  • Can eat puréed foods with assistance
  • Vocal cords will sound while yawning
  • Shows recognition of familiar faces and voices through his own facial expressions
  • Shows excitement, amusement, and/or discomfort through his own facial expressions
  • Can sit up for several minutes without help
  • Communicates by moving his right arm, which is very strong

As we continue to help Kam through his recovery journey, doctors are impressed with the progress.  Some of their goals are to get Kam to aquatic therapy (will help him find his vocal cords), undergo spinal surgery to repair neurological scoliosis, and to find other clinics/institutions that specialize in Kam’s type of injury.  Every equipment item that is used for Kam in therapy at the clinics has been purchased for his home therapy gym.  Kam continues to attend therapy (occupational, speech, and physical) several times a week.

Kameron lives with family who provides an incredible amount of support.   He is an outstanding athlete, excelling in football, basketball, and baseball, with a great attitude both on and off the field.  He has a very strong work ethic, is extremely loyal and loves his friends dearly.
